Ambient AI Just Outgrew the Scribe
Heidi raised $340M to push ambient AI past note-taking into real clinical work. Here's what that shift means for the ward.
A resident finishes a clinic visit, and the note is already drafted. That is what an ambient scribe does today: it listens, it transcribes, it drops a summary into the chart. Useful. Also, apparently, not the point anymore.
The raise
Heidi Health, the Melbourne-founded ambient AI company, just closed $340 million: a $100 million Series C led by Blackbird, with Phoenix Court, Point72 Private Investments and Headline participating, plus a separate $240 million growth investment led by General Catalyst's Customer Value Fund. The round values the company at $900 million, up from $465 million in October 2025 (PYMNTS). Annual recurring revenue is reported at $50 million (PYMNTS).
Founder and CEO Dr. Thomas Kelly framed the raise as a correction, not an expansion: "From the day I started Heidi, the ambition was always bigger than writing doctor's notes. I imagined that AI would sit alongside clinicians and complete real work under their supervision" (PYMNTS). The money is earmarked for agentic features around the visit, not inside it, plus the regulatory and safety scaffolding that agentic work requires (PYMNTS).
What "beyond the note" actually looks like
Heidi's product line already hints at the direction: Scribe handles the ambient transcription and coding suggestions, Dictate is a voice-to-text layer, Remote is a wearable capture device, and Evidence surfaces point-of-care literature with citations and risk scoring, logging more than 10 million queries since its March launch (SiliconANGLE). None of that is a note-taker anymore. It is a set of tools sitting around the clinician's actual workflow: what to check, what to cite, what to do next.
The adoption numbers back the ambition. SiliconANGLE reports a 62% enterprise activation rate across the major public and private health systems Heidi serves, sole-supplier status for NHS England Midlands, and use at Beth Israel Lahey Health in Massachusetts.
Why this is the real story
Every scribe vendor sells the same first pitch: less typing, more patient time. That pitch has a ceiling. A study across five U.S. academic medical centers found ambient scribes cut EHR time by 13.4 minutes and documentation time by 16.0 minutes a day, a real but modest 3% relative reduction (Mass General Brigham / EurekAlert). Thirteen minutes is not nothing. It is also not a platform.
Heidi's bet is that the next unit of value is not the transcript, it is the action that follows it: the literature check, the follow-up call, the task that used to fall on the doctor after the patient left the room. That is a different product category from "scribe," even if it starts from the same microphone.
The catch
Agentic scope means agentic accountability. A tool that only writes down what a clinician said is easy to audit: play back the recording, check the note. A tool that queries evidence, flags risk, and initiates follow-up work is making judgment calls, and judgment calls need to be checked against something, not just trusted because the interface is smooth. Heidi says part of the new money goes to "regulatory and clinical safety foundations" (PYMNTS). That line is doing a lot of work, and it's the one worth watching as these features actually ship into wards rather than press releases.
This is also the argument for treating a clinician's AI tools as a workspace instead of a pile of point solutions. A scribe that transcribes, a separate app that pulls up guidelines, another that manages follow-up tasks: each one is defensible alone, and together they are exactly the fragmentation that made rounds slow in the first place. The compression only pays off if the tools live in one place a doctor can actually verify against the chart in front of them, not four tabs asking for four kinds of trust.
Scribes made documentation less painful. What Heidi is funding now is a bet that doctors will let AI do more than listen. Whether that bet is sound depends entirely on whether the "more" stays checkable.
